Southern California Youth Cricket Academy squads recorded outstanding performances across the board at the Thanksgiving Day LA Youth Open 2024, which took place from November 20-30th. In the U11 Series (Leg 2), SCYCA's U11 youth cricket team won the tournament. The SCYCA U13 squad also claimed a spot in their Series Final and finished 2nd out of 8 teams. Finally, the SCYCA U15 team opened the Thanksgiving youth cricket tournament with a bang, winning their first two matches.
The week-long Thanksgiving Youth Cricket Tournament was hosted by SCCA at the Woodley Park Cricket Complex in Van Nuys, CA. The event featured 32 youth cricket teams across U11, U13, U15, U17, and U19 age categories. U11 through U15 competed in T20 matches, while U17 and U19 played T40 cricket matches. SCYCA entered teams in the U11, U13, and U15 series.
Following up on their win in the 2023 Thanksgiving Day Youth Cricket tournament, the SCYCA U11 squad took the trophy again in this year's showdown.
In their first match of the tournament, SCYCA U11 beat AZ Masterstroke with an 8-wicket win. Jeddiah Malar took 3 wickets and bowled a maiden. Aradhanaa Rajasekaran and Adyant Diwakar led the batting, scoring 24 for 38 (not out) and 57 for 33, respectively, with Adyant earning Player of the Match.
In their second match, SCYCA put up a strong showing against California Cricket Academy (CCA), but ultimately lost by 6 wickets. Vice Captain Aradhanaa Rajasekaran had a standout match all-around, including hitting two 4's and bowling an impressive 2.67 economy across 3 overs.
The SCYCA U11 youth cricket team played against San Diego in their third match and won by 35 runs. Captain Aditya Nidichenametla came out swinging and scored 20 runs off 20 balls, with 4 fours. Aradhanaa Rajasekaran earned Player of the Match for her bowling spell that included 12 dot balls and 2 wickets.
It was showtime in the rematch against CCA in the Series Final, and this time, SCYCA emerged victorious - and what a match it was! SCYCA won by 6 wickets, with their impressive batting carrying them to the win. Player of the Match Aditya Nidichenametla tallied 59 runs off 55 balls and Adyant Diwakar scored 27 runs off 23 balls. The game came down to the final over. Despite CCA capturing 2 wickets near the finish line, SCYCA carried it through to win the Final of the U11 Leg 2 Series.
The victory was a team effort, as evidenced by the Player Rankings Leaderboard: 5 SCYCA U11 players made the Top 10 - more than any other team. Individually, Adyant Diwaker also earned the Best Keeper and Fielder Award in the U11 category for his stellar defensive efforts on the field.
SCYCA's U13 cricket team started off strong with a 21-run win over San Diego in their opening match. Great batting from Captain Aarav Arora (42 runs off 37 balls), Ahan Sharma (51 runs off 49 balls), and Aryan Arora (25 runs off 24 balls) carried SCYCA to a 144 score in the first inning, which they defended with efficient bowling. Ahan Sharma was named Player of the Match.
The Southern California Youth Cricket Academy U13 players kept the win streak going in their next match against New Jersey Youth Cricket Academy (NJYCA), with an 8-wicket victory.
SCYCA opened with exceptional bowling across the board to hold NJYCA to just 81 runs. Batting-wise, Aarav Arora hit 40 runs off 34 balls, including four 4's, and earned the Player of the Match award.
SCYCA U13 played CCA next in a game that came down to the wire in the last over. CCA took the win by 7 wickets, but SCYCA's performances carried them into the U13 Series Final against Blazers Cricket Academy (BCA).
In the Final, SCYCA fought hard and kept the scoreboard ticking with batting from Ahan Sharma (19 runs off 30 balls), Rishaan Agwekar (20 runs off 23 balls), and Akshay Nidichenametla (21 runs off 22 balls), but BCA ultimately won by 32 runs.
The SCYCA U13 squad finished 2nd out of 8 teams on the points table, with Ahan Sharma ranking in the Top 10 out of 104 players for his stellar batting and fielding performances.
SCYCA's U15 team opened the Thanksgiving Day Youth Cricket Tournament with a bang, easily winning their first two matches in a pool of 8 teams.
In their first head-to-head, SCYCA kept the San Diego U15 squad to just 106 runs, with 5 different SCYCA players taking wickets, and Adithya Anand and Neel Mehta also bowling a maiden over each.
SCYCA Captain Om Medandrao earned Player of the Match for his 53 runs off 40 balls (not out), while Shritan Reddy Yelal earned the Manager's Medal for his performance of 40 runs off 29 balls (not out), with the batting partnership carrying the team to a 9-wicket victory.
In their next match against NJYCA, SCYCA won by 4 wickets. Neel Mehta took 2 wickets and Anerva Ashok Kumar Sathya put up strong batting numbers (33 runs off 36 balls) to claim Player of the Match. Pavan Maharaj earned the Manager's Medal for his outstanding fielding, including two direct hit run-outs.
SCYCA then took on VK Cricket Academy (VKCA). VKCA's won by 21 runs, but the SCYCA U15 youth played well. Highlights include Adit Jain's fantastic bowling spell across 4 overs, with a 3.0 economy and 14 dot balls, and Shritan Reddy Yelal's and Kian Sahasrabudhe's 2-wicket-grab each.
The SCYCA U15 team competed against Woodley Youth Cricket Academy (WYCA) in the U15 Series 3rd place decider. Shritan Reddy Yelal (52 runs off 48 balls) and Anerva Ashok Kumar Sathya (33 runs off 45 balls) registered fantastic batting performances again. Unfortunately, the match was closed out using the Duckworth-Lewis (D/L) method, with WYCA claiming an 8-wicket win.
Even against some tough competition, SCYCA's U15 youth cricket team had standout performances. Shritan Reddy Yelal's batting numbers (including 13 4's) placed him 3rd on the Most Runs Leaderboard and he ranked 1st out of 101 players on the Overall Leaderboard for the Thanksgiving Youth Cricket Tournament U15 Series.
